STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

THALAM

INTRODUCTION

Thalam is the procedure of applying medicated paste with or without oil over the vertex of the head for a specific duration.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

The Materials required for performing Thalam are

  • Churnas like rasnadi /amalaki/ kachooradi –  5g
  • Liquid medicaments like thaila/ gritha/ ksheera/ navaneeta/ takra/ Swarasa – 5ml
  • Plantain leaf – 1
  • Vessel – 1
  • Cotton
  • Spoon – 1
  • Scissors – 1
PURVA KARMA

Preparation of Thalam

  • The vessel in which the taila is to be taken is preheated.
  • To this hot vessel, the required quantity of taila is poured.
  • Lukewarm oil in the vessel is mixed with required quantity of churna to get a thick paste.

Alternative Method of Preparation of Thalam

  • Required quantity of Churna is taken in a bowl.
  • It is mixed with liquid medicaments like swarasa, takra, ksheera, etc to get a thick paste.
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The patient is asked to sit comfortably on a knee highchair.
  • The vertex of the patient is marked by positioning the distance from tip of the nose to vertex.
  • The prepared thalam is applied over the vertex with approximately 2cm thickness.
  • This paste is then covered using a plantain leaf.
  • The thalam is secured in position by tying it with a headband for specific duration.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • The thalam is removed from head.
  • Head is wiped using a towel and Rasnadi churna is applied over the vertex.
DURATION
  •  5 – 10 minutes
