SHIRO BASTI

INTRODUCTION

Shirobasti is the procedure, where medicated oil is retained over the head for a specific time.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP 
  • Black gram flour – 200 g
  • Water-100 ml
  • Taila – 1.5 litres
  • Rexin/leather (75 cm X 25 cm)- 1
  • Cotton ribbon (60 cm X 23 cm)- 2 strips

  • Vessel (2 litre) -1
  • Large vessel- 1
  • Soft towel- 2
  • Hot waterbath-1
  • Knee-height chair – 1

PREPARATION

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put towel, oil in bowl, black gram flour, rexin/leather, cotton ribbon.

  • Check vitals.

PURVA KARMA

Preparation of black gram paste:

  • 200 gm of black gram powder is taken in a bowl.
  • To this, about 100 ml of water is added.
  • This mixture is kneaded well to get a compact/tight dough.
  • The dough is then rolled to make a frame wall of approximately 1inch height.
  • Two head bands are smeared with masha paste on either side.
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The patient with cleanly shaved head is asked to be seated in a knee height chair.
  • Ear plug is inserted into both ears.
  • The head band smeared with black gram paste is wrapped around the forehead above the ears.
  • The Rexene cap is placed over the head band.
  • Another head band smeared with black gram paste is firmly tied around the rexin cap
  • The inside space between the Rexin cap and head is sealed using the prepared masha ring.
  • The Taila for Shirobasti is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • The temperature of the medicine is checked by pouring over dorsum of hand.
  • Then, the Taila is poured slowly inside the rexin cap.
  • The oil is poured up to a height of 1 angula above the scalp.
  • Uniform temperature is maintained throughout the procedure by refilling it with lukewarm oil.
  • The oil is retained until samyak lakshanas such as secretion from mouth and nose occur.

PASCHAT KARMA
  • The oil is removed using a spoon or a cotton piece.
  • Then the Masha band, basti cap and masha ring is removed.
  • The area is cleaned, and ear plugs are removed.
  • The head, ears and shoulders are massaged using lukewarm oil.
  • The head is wiped using a towel and rasnadi choorna is applied over the vertex.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Acute inflammatory diseases
  • Infections
PRECAUTIONS
  • Ensure that there is no hole in the junction of the cap before pouring to check leakage of oil.
  • Ensure the uniformity of the temperature of oil.
  • The taila should be heated only in hot water bath.
  • Patient should not sleep, sneeze, and laugh during the treatment.
  • Avoid cold food items, cold breeze exposure.
  • Avoid very hot and cold conditions.
  • Avoid head bath if the disease is contra indicated for the same.
COMPLICATIOPNS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Sneezing and rhinitis- Talam with Rasnadi choorna and Jambeera swarasa, dhoomapana with Haridra dhooma varti
  • Neck pain- Local massage
  • Heaviness of head- Stop the procedure and treat accordingly
  • Fainting, Headache & Shivering-Treat accordingly.
