ANUVASANA BASTI

INTRODUCTION

The procedure in which medicated taila is administered through rectal route.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP
  • Medicated taila for anuvasana basti – Q. S.
  • Saindhava – 1 gm
  • Sathapushpa churna – 1 gm
  • Taila for abhyanga – 150 ml
  • Thalam
  • Enema syringe – 1
  • Cotton pad – 2
  • Towel – 1
  • Bowl – 2
  • Vessels – 1
  • Khalwa yantra – 1
  • Gloves – 2
  • Hot water bath
  • Dhara table – 1
  • Steam box

PREPARATION

 

Preparation of medicine

  • The medicated taila for anuvasana basti is taken in a khalwa yantra.
  • Add 1 gm of saindhava and 1 gm of sathapushpa churna to the taila and triturated well till it become a homogenous mixture.

Preparation of Thalam

  • Prescribed drugs taken and thalam prepared.
  • Refer video and SOP of Thalam

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put prepared basti dravya in a bowl, taila for abhyanga in a bowl, enema syringe, thalam, cotton pad, langotti, towel, gloves.

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernahara lakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
  • Make patient wear langotti.
PURVA KARMA

 

  • Sarvanga abhyanga is to be done in all seven postures. (Ref SOP and video of abhyanga)
  • Then, bashpa sweda is to be done. (Ref SOP and video of bashpa sweda)
  • After that the patient is asked to take hot shower and advised to take food less by one fourth of the usual quantity.
PRADHANA KARMA

 

  • Patient is asked to lie in left lateral position with right leg flexed and left leg straight.
  • The left hand of the patient is flexed in such a way that head is rested over the left arm in the form of a pillow and right hand placed above the body.
  • The basti dravya prepared is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • The therapist is to wear gloves on both the hands.
  • Then basti dravya is to be filled into the enema syringa and expel out the air inside the syringe.
  • Lubricate the syringe first using the cotton pad dipped in medicated oil and then the anal opening, which facilitates the easy entry of the syringe into the anal canal.
  • Using the right hand, the enema syringe is gently inserted into the anal canal.
  • Then slowly push the basti dravya at a single stretch.
  • Ask the patient to take deep breath with mouth during the administration.
  • After the administration gently remove the syringe.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • Tap the buttocks of the patient by the hands of the therapist.
  • Then the patient is asked to lie in supine position.
  • Being in the same position patient is asked to rub both hands and at the same time therapist rubs the patient’s sole.
  • Then lift the foot of the patient thrice.
  • Patient is asked to relax for few minutes in the same position.

  • Bleeding Disorders
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weak person
PRECAUTIONS
  • Should closely observe the general condition of the patient during the procedure.
  • Anuvasana basti should never be given without taking food.
  • Patient is advised to take food which is neither with more of fats nor very dry.
  • Basti dravya should be administered neither too fast nor too slow.
  • Small quantity of liquid should be allowed to remain in the syringe to prevent the entering of air.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Abdominal pain: fomentation with hot water bag, can give dhanwantharam gulika or hinguvachadi churna.
  • Distension of abdomen: fomentation with hot water bag, can give dhanwantharam gulika or hinguvachadi churna.
  • Nausea, vomiting: can give vilwadi lehya, madiphala rasayana, dhanwantaram gulika
  • Heaviness of body: snehana and swedana
