STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

BASHPA SWEDA

INTRODUCTION

Bashpa Sweda is the procedure in which whole body except head region is exposed to steam in a steam chamber.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP
  • Medicated taila -150 ml
  • Dasamoola Kashaya churna-Q.S.
  • Fresh leaves of Eranda, Nirgundi, Arka etc -Q.S.
  • Bowl -1
  • Towel -1
  • Blanket -1
  • Hot water bath -1
  • Steam chamber -1
  • Steam generator -1

PREPARATION

Preparation of Thalam

  • Prescribed drugs taken and thalam prepared.
  • Refer video and SOP 0f Thalam

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put langotti, towel, thalam, oil in bowl.

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernahara lakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
  • Make patient wear langotti.
PURVAKARMA

Preparation of steam

  • Sufficient quantity of water is poured in to steam generator vessel.
  • Dasamoola Kashaya choorna and fresh vatahara leaves are added into it and the lid is closed.
  • The nozzle from the steam generator is connected to the steam chamber.
  • The steam generator is switched on to generate steam.
  • When steam starts emitting from the steam generator, the steam chamber is closed.
  • Thus, the chamber will be filled with steam.
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The patient is asked to sit comfortably on the dhroni.
  • Talam is applied over the vertex
  • Oil is applied on the whole body to spread evenly.
  • Once the steam chamber is filled with steam the patient is asked to enter the chamber.
  • The patient is asked to sit in the chamber comfortably with head extended outside the chamber.
  • The door of the chamber is closed tight to avoid leakage of the steam
  • The gap between the neck region and the chamber is wrapped with a thick blanket to avoid leakage of steam .
  • The steam bath is continued till the appearance of perspiration.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • Towel placed at the opening is removed and the door is opened.
  • Patient is asked to come outside the chamber.
  • The whole body is wiped with a towel.
  • Then, the patient is asked to take hot shower after resting for a while.
  • Rasnadi choorna is applied over vertex after bath.
DURATION
  • Till the appearance of perspiration usually 10 minutes.

  • Hemiplegia
  • Paraplegia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoarthritis
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Visarpa
  • Timira
  • Atisara
  • Raktapitta
PRECAUTIONS
  • Should closely observe the general condition of the patient during the procedure.
  • If there is any doubt of over sweating the patient should be immediately brought out of the sveda yantra.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Fainting: take rest with cooling decoctions like drakshadi Kashaya, sprinkle cold water on the face, apply suitable oil.
  • Burns: Apply Shathadoudha Gritham or Mahathikthaka Gritham
