STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

NASYA

INTRODUCTION

The process of administration of the medicines through the nasal route is known as Nasya Karma.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP
  • Taila for Mukhabhyanga – 50 ml
  • Medicine for Nasya – Q. S.
  • Dhoomavarthi – 1
  • Saindhava jala – Q. S.
  • Cotton ear plug – 2
  • Eye pad – 1
  • Towel – 1
  • Gokarna – 1
  • Nadisweda yantra – 1
  • Dhoomanetra – 1
  • Sputum cup – 1
  • Tumbler – 1
  • Bowl – 2
  • Vessel – 1
  • Hot water bath

PREPARATION

 

  1. Preparation of tray
  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put medicine for nasya, oil for mukhabhyanga in a bowl, eye pad, cotton ear plugs, towel, gokarna, dhooma varthi, dhooma netra, saindhava jala in a tumbler.
  1. Preparation of patient
  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernahara lakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
PURVA KARMA

 

  • The patient is asked to be seated in Droni with leg extended.
  • Ear plug is inserted into both the ears.
  • Then, the patient is asked to lie in supine position.

Mukhabhyanga

  • Patient’s face is wiped with a clean towel.
  • The Taila for Mukhabhyanga is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • Then the luke warm taila is massaged over forehead, nose, cheek, chin and neck of the patient.

Nadi Sweda

  • Ref video and SOP of nadi sweda.
  • The eyes of the patient are covered with an eye pad.
  • The steam is made to fall on the parts above the shoulder.
  • Passing of the steam is continued till the appearance of perspiration.

Dhoomapana

  • Ref video and SOP of dhoomapana.
  • The patient is asked to inhale smoke through one nostril while closing the other nostril and exhale by mouth.
  • The eye pad is removed after dhoomapana.
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The medicine to be instilled in to the nostril is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • The eyes of the patient are covered with an eye pad.
  • Patient is asked to lie straight in supine position spreading his upper and lower limbs.
  • Slightly raise the legs of the patient by keeping a pillow behind the foot.
  • Then extend the patient’s neck partially.
  • The tip of patient’s nose is drawn upward by left middle finger of the therapist and with right hand lukewarm medicine is poured in to the nasal cavity using gokarna.
  • The medicine is administered to both nostrils in a continuous stream, one after the other, keeping one nostril closed with left ring finger or index finger while the other is instilled with medicine.
  • Patient is asked to inhale the medicine slowly.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • The eyepad is removed and the patient is asked to relax in supine position .
  • Then massage the regions of ears, forehead, cheeks, nape of neck, palm and sole.
  • Patient is asked to inhale with moderate force and to spit out the medicine along with Kapha by turning head to both sides alternatively without rising from the cot.
  • Then patient is asked to be seated and again eyes are covered with an eye pad.
  • Nadi Sweda is to be given till all the medicine is brought out.
  • Thereafter, according to the type of shuddhi, dhoomapana is to be done as before.
  • Then kavala (gargle) is to be done with luke warm saindhava jala.
  • The ear plugs are removed.
  • Rasnadi churna is applied over the vertex.

  • Headache
  • Diseases of head
  • Falling and premature greying of hair
  • Dandruff
  • Diseases of mouth, eyes, nose, throat and ears
  • Psychosomatic disorders
  • Facial paralysis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Convulsions
  • Worm infestation
  • Poisoning
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Pregnancy
  • Weak persons
  • Fever
  • Indigestion
  • Who has consumed meals, Sneha, water
  • Who has taken head bath
  • Extreme fatigue
PRECAUTIONS
  • Should closely observe the general condition of the patient during the procedure.
  • Do not swallow the medicine.
  • Medicine should be poured in a uniform and continuous stream.
  • Instruct the patient to avoid exposure to dust, smoke, sunshine, intake of Sneha, excessive intake of fluids, head bath, excessive travelling, suffering from emotional disturbances like anger, grief etc.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Headache and heaviness of head
  • Acute rhinitis
  • Nasal blockage and nasal irritation

These conditions can be managed by steam inhalation.

  • Fainting: sprinkle cold water over face.
