ASCHYOTANA

INTRODUCTION

Aschyotana is the procedure of instilling medicated eyedrops.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP
  • Liquid medicaments like Swarasa/Arka/ Gritha/ Ksheera/Kashaya
  • Hot water for fomentation
  • Gauze pad
  • Cottonballs
  • Gokarna
  • Water bath
  • Towel

PREPARATION

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put towel, medicine in bowl, gokarna, cotton balls, gauze pad

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernaharalakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
PRADHANA KARMA
  • Patient is asked to lie in supine position
  • The medicine is heated using a water bath.
  • The required amount of medicine is droped into a gokarna.
  • The eyelid of the patient is lifted using physicians left thumb and fingers.
  • Using right hand, the medicine is instilled drop by dropon Kaninaka Sandhi.
  • Similarly, the medicine is instilled in left eye.
  • Medicine is instilled from a height of 2 Angula.
  • It is retained for 100 Matrakala.
  • The medicine remaining in the eye is wiped out with cotton balls.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • Hot fomentation is given around the eyes using gauze pad soaked in warm water.
  • Do not apply pressure for fomentation. 
DURATION
  • 100 Matrakala
INDICATIONS
  • Redness of eye
  • Lacrimation
  • Friction in the eyes
  • Itching of eyes
  • Pricking pain in the eyes
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • At night
  • Infectious eye disease
PRECAUTIONS
  • Do not pour the medicine for aschyotana from height of more than 2 Angula.
  • The drugs used for aschyotana should not be too strong, too hot, too cold, excessive or less and staying at one place without spreading all over.
COMPLICATIONS
  • Too strong or too hot drugs cause burning, redness, ulceration, and loss of vision.
  • Too cold substances cause lacrimation, friction, dull and constant pain.
  • Excessive dosage causes dryness, constriction, throbbing, not able to withstand of opening the eyes, friction in the eyes etc.
