KARNAPOORANAM

INTRODUCTION

Karnapoorana is a procedure in which the medicine is instilled into the ear canal and retained for a specific time.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
  • Ref General Requirements SOP 
  • Hot water for fomentation
  • Thaila for abhyanga
  • Liquid medicaments like thaila, swarasa or kashaya
  • Cotton balls
  • Gauze pads
  • Gokarna
  • Kidney tray

PREPARATION

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put towel, tailain bowl, gauze pad, cotton balls, kidney tray.

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernaharalakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
PURVA KARMA
  • The patient is asked to lie in supine position.
  • The patient’sface is turned towards left side exposing the right ear.
  • Oil for abhyanga is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • The area around the ear is massaged with lukewarm oil.
  • Then hot fomentation is given around the ear, using a towel soaked in boiling water.  
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The medicine for karnapoorana is made lukewarm using a hot water bath.
  • The temperature of the medicine is checked by pouring it over the dorsum of hand.
  • The medicine is pouredinto the ear using a gokarnatill the whole ear canal is filled.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • After the specific duration the medicine is drained out of the ear canal into a kidney tray by slowly turning to opposite side.
  • Then the ear canalis cleaned with cotton.
  • The patient is asked to keep ear plugs throughout the day.
DURATION
  • The duration of the procedure depends upon the rogasthana.

INDICATIONS
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Deaf
  • Lockjaw
  • Cervical spondylosis
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Ear injury
  • CSOM
  • Burns
  • Ear drum rupture
PRECAUTIONS
  • The oil used for karnapoorana should be fresh and clean.
  • Otherwise, it may cause fungal infection in the ear.
  • The oil used should be lukewarm in nature.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Burns: Cool water or a cold compress can be applied to the affected area to reduce pain and inflammation. Apply shatadouthagritha.
  • Dizziness: rest in a cool place until the sensation passes.
