SNEHAPANA

INTRODUCTION

Snehapana is the procedure of intake of unctuous substance before the purificatory procedures till the attainment of symptoms of proper oleation (samyak snigdha lakshana).

PREPARATION

Preparation of medicine

Fixation of dose of snehapana

  • The dose of snehapana is increased in subsequent days and is calculated as
  • (Previous day dosage ÷ per hour digestion) × time required for digestion
  • For example, if the previous day dosage is 30 ml, per hour digestion is 3 hours and the time required for digestion is 6 hours then calculated as,(30÷3)×6=60 ml. So, the next day dosage is 60 ml.

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put medicated ghee, lemon, water boiled with shunti, towel, eyepad, cotton ear plug.

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernahara lakshana assessed.

PURVA KARMA
  • Rookshana is to be done with deepana-pachana dravyas and karmas like udwarthana, dhanyamladhara, kashayadhara.
  • For agni & koshtapareeksha give medicated Sneha in Hraseeyasi mathra (Usually 25 – 30ml).
PRADHANA KARMA
  • Snehapana is carried out in the early morning at the time of sunrise in an empty stomach.
  • The patient is asked to sit comfortably in a knee high chair.
  • Patient’s eyes are covered with an eye pad.
  • The medicated ghee for snehapana is melted in hot water bath.
  • The lukewarm medicated ghee is then given to the patient and allowed to drink.
  • The lemon is given to smell, if any aversion or hesitation towards ghee.
  • Once the ghee has been consumed, the eye pad is removed and the patient is asked to sip hot water / water boiled with shunti.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • Patient should take rest during the snehapana period but should not sleep during the day time.
  • Lemon can be given to smell to avoid nausea.
  • Take appropriate quantity of warm liquid diet only when the sneha is completely digested and good appetite occurs.
DURATION
  • Snehapana may be continued till the samyak snigdha lakshanas like vatanulomana (downward movement of vata), agnideepti (good digestive fire), snigdha and asamhata varcha (unctuous and unformed stool), snehodvega (aversion to fat), and klama (exhaustion) is attained.
  • Usually 3-7 days are taken for attaining samyak snigdha lakshana.

PRECAUTIONS
  • Before starting and during the process patient should be on strict regime.
  • Drink only hot water whenever feeling thirsty.
  • Take proper quantity of hot and liquid diets not producing excess moisture inside, free of fat content and not mixed with many varieties of substances.
  • Take food only when good appetite occurs.
  • Use hot water for all his needs
  • Maintain celibacy.
  • Not to suppress natural urges of the body
  • Not to indulge in exercise, anger, grief,
  • Avoid exposure to cold, sunlight, breeze, smoke and dust
  • Avoid travelling in vehicles, walking long distance, too much of speaking, sitting continuously at the same place, use of pillows either too thick or too thin, day-sleep.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT

In such conditions, stop snehapana immediately. Give deepana pachana dravya, rukshana kriya (anna, pana, bheshaja) and doshavasechana (sadyovamana in utklishta dosha avastha)
