UDWARTANA

INTRODUCTION

Udwartana is a type of fomentation where heated medicated powder is used to massage the body in upward direction for a specific duration of time.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

  • Medicated Churnalike kolakulathadichurna– 350 gm
  • Heating Pan – 1
  • Bowl -1
  • Spatula – 1
  • Towel – 1

PREPARATION

Preparation of Thalam

  • Prescribed drugs taken and thalam prepared.
  • Refer video and SOP of thalam

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put prescribed churna in bowl, langotti, towel, thalam.

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernaharalakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
  • Make patient wear langotti.
PURVA KARMA
  • The Medicated powder is heated sufficiently in a heating pan under low flame.
  • Initially the patient is asked to sit comfortably over the droni.
  • Rasnadithalam is placed over the vertex.
  • Then the patient is asked to sit with legs extended.
  • The body and foot is cleaned with a towel.
PRADHANA KARMA

 

  • The procedure is done in all 7 postures starting with Sitting, Supine, Right Lateral, Supine, Left Lateral, Supine and Sitting.
  • In sitting posture,initially it is massaged from wrist to shoulder, then foot to hip and finally from hand  to nape of neck.
  • The warm churna is used to massage with mild pressure over patients’ body towards upward direction, opposite to the hair follicles  in a synchronised manner.
  • Temperature of the churna is maintained throughout the procedure by reheating it in a hot pan .
  • The quantity of churna is also ensured by replacing it with fresh churna.
  • Then the patient is asked to lie in supine position.
  • The heated churna is used to massage  initially covering from hands to abdomen and foot to hip. Then the entire body is covered by massaging  it simultaneously as linear strokes from feet to hands.
  • The patient is then asked to lie in left lateral position with right knee flexed.
  • The heated churna is massaged with mild pressure over the hip to hand by one therapist, while the other therapist covers foot to back region.
  • Then the patient is asked to lie in supine position and same strokes are repeated for rubbing the churn on to the body.
  • The patient is then asked to lie in right lateral position with left knee flexed.
  • The heated churna is massaged with mild pressure over the hip to hand by one therapist, while the other therapist covers foot to back region.
  • Then the patient is again asked to lie in supine position and same strokes are repeated for rubbing the churna on to the body.
  • Finally, the patient is made to sit with legs extended and respective strokes mentioned for sitting posture are repeated.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • Thalam is removed.
  • The churna which is remaining in the dhroni and patients body is removed completely.
  • Patient is asked to take hot shower after resting for a while.
  • Rasnadichoorna is applied over vertex after bath.

  • Dry skin
  • Wounds, cuts and burns
  • Oozing type Eczema
  • Pregnancy
PRECAUTIONS
  • Should closely observe the general condition of the patient during the procedure.
  • Tender areas should be avoided for Udvartana.
  • Precaution should be taken while dusting the powder over the body. It is advisable to protect face, nose and eyes to prevent irritation.
  • Aseptic measures should be taken if patient is suffering from any contagious disease.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Fainting: take rest with cooling decoctions like drakshadi Kashaya, sprinkle cold water on the face.
  • Small skin abrasions or skin damage especially when done in people with sensitive skin or dry skin: Apply ShathadoudhaGritha
