VALUKA SWEDA

INTRODUCTION

Valuka sweda is the procedure of application of heated sand pack over the body to induce perspiration.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

PREPARATION

Preparation of tray

  • Take a clean tray.
  • Put 2 kizhi, towel, ladle

Preparation of patient

  • Check vitals.
  • Jeernahara lakshana assessed.
  • Vegotsarga
PURVA KARMA

Preperation of Valuka Potali

  • The Sand to be heated is kept on the kadai and heated
  • Once the sand is heated sufficiently it is transferred in to the cora cloth
  • The cora cloth is then tied loosely to make a potali.
PRADHANA KARMA
  • The patient is asked to sit comfortably in dhroni.
  • The knee joint is exposed properly to do the procedure.
  • Temperature of the potali is checked by the therapist by placing it over the dorsum of his hand.
  • Temperature is also confirmed with the patient by placing it over the foot.
  • The potali with heated sand is applied on both knee joint by patting it in circular pattern.
  • The temperature of the potali is maintained by reheating it in sand bath.
  • The procedure can be done likewise on whole body by performing it in all 7 postures.
PASCHAT KARMA
  • The area is cleaned using a towel.
  • The patient is asked to take rest.
DURATION
  • The procedure is done up to perspiration appear over the region.
INDICATIONS
  • Stiffness
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Swelling
  • Obesity
CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Fever
  • Fracture
  • Varicose vein
  • Hypertension
PRECAUTIONS
  • Valuka sweda should not be performed soon after the intake of food.
  • The sand used for valuka sweda should be clean and free from debris.
  • Do not overheat the sand pack as it may cause burns.
  • Same pressure and temperature should be maintained while doing the procedure.
  • Temperature of the potali is confirmed by the therapist and patient before applying to the body parts.
  • Gentle tapping should be followed over the tender areas.
  • Therapists on both sides should apply kizhi in a synchronized manner on patient’s body.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
  • Rashes and burns- Stop the procedure immediately. Apply shatadoutha gritha and murivenna.
  • Fainting – Sprinkle cold water and drakshadi Kashaya can be given internally.
