GAṆḌŪṢA

असञ्चार्यो मुखे पूर्णे गण्डुष: कवलो अन्यथा ( अ.हॄ.Su.22/12)       

It is a procedure of filling the mouth with liquid without making any movement is gaṇḍūṣa

Pūrva karma

Preparation of the patient

  • Sthānika abhyaṅga to the face, neck and shoulder is carried out.
  • Svedana in the form of nādi sveda has to be done.
  • The medicated liquid needed for the procedure has to be made warm by placing over a hot water bath.

Pradhāna karma

The procedure has to be carried out in a nivātasthāna (devoid of wind) and it should done on sunny day.

The subject is asked to fill the mouth with the medicated liquid as much as he can accommodate in his mouth.

The oil has to kept undisturbed in the mouth till the mouth gets filled with kapha or till there is srāva from nose and eyes.

Paścāt karma

The subject can spit out the liquid into the spittoon.

The subject can clean his mouth with warm water.

Indication – dantaharsha, dantachaala, vātaja mukha roga, vraṇa in the mukha.

Kavala

Kavala is a procedure of filling the mouth with medicated liquid and the liquid has to be permitted movement inside the mouth.

Indication – śiroroga, manyaroga, karṇaroga, akśiroga,hrrilasa, tandra, aruchi, peenasa (a.hr.su.22/12)

KARṆAPŪRAṆA

KARṆAPŪRAṆA

Introduction:

The procedure of filling oil/ medicated liquid into ears for a prescribed time is known as Karṇa purana.

Method:

            धारयेत्पूरणं कर्णे कर्णमूलं विमर्दयन्|
      रुजः स्यान्मार्दवं यावन्मात्राशतमवेदने||३२||

Pūrvakarma:

  • Proper examination of ear.
  • Ear should be cleaned with ear buds, if there is any discharge or ear wax accumulation.
  • Proper abhyaṅga and svedana should be given for ear and neck.

Pradhāna karma:

  • Patient is made to lie in lateral position – right lateral position for left ear and left lateral position for right ear.
  • Lukewarm medicated oil/liquid is filled into ear with the help of gokarṇa or dropper.
  • Patient is advised not to move till the completion of the procedure.

Paścātkarma:

  • Filled medicated oil should be taken out with the help of a vessel by slowly turning to opposite side.
  • Ear cavity should be cleaned with the tissue paper or cotton.
  • Ear plug should be kept in the ears.

 

Benefits:

            न कर्णरोगा वातोत्था न मन्याहनुसङ्ग्रहः|
      नोच्चैः श्रुतिर्न बाधिर्यं स्यान्नित्यं कर्णतर्पणात्||८४||

One who practices karṇapūraṇa daily will not suffer from ear disease of vātatype, stiffness of the neck and jaws, difficulty in hearing loud sounds and deafness.

NĀSĀPŪRAṆA

NĀSĀPŪRAṆA

Introduction:

Nasya is one among the pañcakarma where, the medicines are administered through the nasal cavity. It is very much notable that when different forms of medicines like sneha, cūrṇa, svarasa, etc are given considering doṣa, kāla, vaya, mātrā, parihāra viṣaya, purifactory or curative actions are attained.

चूर्णस्याध्मापनं तद्धि देहस्रोतोविशोधनम् [] |
विज्ञेयस्त्रिविधो धूमः प्रागुक्तः शमनादिकः||९१||
प्रतिमर्शो भवेत् स्नेहो निर्दोष उभयार्थकृत्|
एवं तद्रेचनं कर्म तर्पणं शमनं त्रिधा||९२||

Contraindication:

Method:

Pūrvakarma:

  • After evacuation of the natural urges, the patient is given abhyaṅga and svedana in uttamāṅga.
  • After abhyaṅga and svedana, patient is made to lie in supine position with head slightly extended upto 45degree.

Pradhānakarma:

  • The nasya dravya is measured and is indirectly made warm by placing it over the hot water bath.
  • Later, the tip of patient’s nose is drawn upward by the vāmapradeshini and with dakṣiṇa haṣṭa,the lukewarm medication is instilled into both nostrils using picu or suktika.
  • The medicine is administered to both the nostrils in an avichinnadhāra, one after the other, keeping one nostril closed while the other is instilled with medicine.
  • The patient should remain relaxed during and after the time of administration of nasya and has to avoid speech, anger, sneezing, laughing and excessive shaking of the head.

Paścātkarma:

  • After administering nasya, the regions of ears, forehead, scalp and cheek, nape of the neck, shoulders, palms and soles are massaged.
  • The patient is asked to inhale the medicine with moderate force and to spit it through his mouth turning the head to either side alternatively without rising the cot.
  • Frequent fomentation is given till all the medicament is brought out.
  • Dhūmapāna is advised.
  • Kavala with hot water is done.
AKṢITARPAṆA

AKṢITARPAṆA

 

Introduction:

Akṣitarpaṇa is one of the netra kriyakalpa which gives nourishment to the eyes and cures the disease of the eyes due to vāta and pitta. In this process the eyes are filled upon with medicated oil or ghee for a certain period.

Indication:

नयने ताम्यति स्तब्धे शुष्के रूक्षेऽभिघातिते|
वातपित्तातुरे जिह्मे शीर्णपक्ष्माविलेक्षणे||१||
कृच्छ्रोन्मीलशिराहर्षशिरोत्पाततमोर्जुनैः|
स्यन्दमन्थान्यतोवातवातपर्यायशुक्रकैः||२||

Darkness before eyes, stiffness, dryness, trauma in eyes, vātaand pitta disorders of eyes, squint, falling of eyelashes, blurring of the vision, paralysis of eyeball, loss of eyelashes, difficulty in opening the eyes, congestion, glaucoma, nervedisorders of eyes, corneal opacity.

Contraindications:

दुर्दिनात्युष्णशीतेषु चिन्तायासभ्रमेषु च ||१८||
अशान्तोपद्रवे चाक्ष्णि तर्पणं न प्रशस्यते |१९|

      Cloudy day, hot or cold seasons, worried, tiredness, giddiness when person is having increased pain.

Method:

Pūrvakarma:

  • Kaya and śiro śodhana.

Pradhānakarma:

  • Should be performed in sādhāraṇa kālaḥ either morning or evening in nivātasthāna, after digestion of previous food.
  • Patient should be asked to lie down comfortably in supine position.
  • Māṣapāli has to be preapared and should stick around the eyes in 2 aṅgula height to prevent the leakage.
  • Prescribed medicated oil is filled upto the level of eyelashes and the patient is asked to open and close the eyelids frequently upto specific time according to vitiation of doṣās.

Paścātkarma:

  • After attaining the samyak lakṣaṇas, the medicine should be removed from the outer canthus.
  • Eyes should be cleaned after removing the māṣapishti.
  • Prakshālana should be done with lukewarm water.
  • Vairecanika dhūma should be given.
  • Advise the patient not to make effort to see the distant and bright things.
