Vamana and virecana plays a very important role in śodhana procedures for the promotion of health as well as for the preventive and curation of the diseases.
Vamana karma helps to eliminate the diseases caused by the aggravation of kapha. It is also helpful for prānavahasrotovikāras. Whereas virecana is helpful for pitta vikāras. These śodhana procedures are not only done for particular doṣa predominance, but also for bahu doṣajaavastha, upasthitadoṣas and also for sthānagatadoṣas.

In vasantaṛtu– vamana, and in śaratṛtu– virecana karma is done.
These śodhana therapies are also indicated as preparatory procedures before the administration of rasāyana and vājīkaraṇatherapy. Śodhana therapies makes the biological system to return to its normalcy, to rejuvenate the body rapidly, and also facilitates the desired pharmacokinetic effect of therapeutic remedies. It purifies the body, maximises the absorption and increases the metabolism. Śodhana karma plays a viṭal role in all the eight branches of Āyurveda.
Vamana karma cures diseases like kāsa, upalepa, svarabheda, tandrā, mukhadaurgandhya, kaphapraseka, garaviṣa, asthma, chronic bronchitis psoriasis, hypothyroidism, obesity etc. and also the diseases manifested in the grahini will not occur after vamana karma. ĀcāryaSuśruta explains with a similie that, when the root of the tree is cut, its flowers, fruits, and branches are destroyed. In the same way diseases originated due to excessive kapha are pacified after the expulsion of kapha by vamana therapy.
Virecana therapy is very much essential for paittikarogas, and mṛduvirecana is taken as the line of treatment in vātavyādhi. It is helpful in diseases of pitta associated with kaphaand also for kapha in pitta sthāna. It is effective for plīhajavyādhis, kuṣṭa, tilakālaka, nīlikā, vyaṅga, visarpa, visphoṭa, vātarakta. It is opted as the first line of management in vātapradhānatamakaśvāsa and āvaranajanyapakshāghāta. It is done in emergency conditions such as pakvāśayagataviṣa, garaviṣaetc.
