The disease is indicated for diseases of Śira, Danta, Manyāstambha, Galagraha, Hanugraha, Pīnasa, Galaśuṇḍikā, Śukla Roga, Timira, Vartma Roga, Upajihvikā, Ardhāvabhedaka, Grīva, Skandha, Aṃsa, Āsya, Nāsā, Karṇa, Akṣi, Kapāla and Śiro Rogas, Ardita, Apatantraka, Apatānaka, Galagaṇḍa, Danta Śūla, Danta Harṣa, Danta Cāla, Akṣi Rāji, Arbuda, Svarabheda, Vāggraha, Gadgada, Krathana, Ūrdhva Jatrugata Vātadi Vikāra.
SPECIFIC INDICATIONS OF VARIOUS NASYA
Virecana Nasya :
विरेचनं शिरःशूलजाड्यस्यन्दगलामये||२||
शोफगण्डकृमिग्रन्थिकुष्ठापस्मारपीनसे| (As Hr/Su/20/2)
Virecana Nasya is indicated in Śira Śūla, Śiro Jāḍya, Syanda, Galāmaya, Gaṇḍa, Sopha, Kṛmi, Granthi, Kuṣṭha, Apasmāra, Pīnasa.
Bṛṃhaṇa Nasya:
बृंहणं वातजे शूले सूर्यावर्ते स्वरक्षये||३||
नासास्यशोषे वाक्सङ्गे कृच्छ्रबोधेऽवबाहुके| (As Hr/Su/20/3)
Bṛṃhaṇa Nasya is indicated for Śiraśūla of Vāta origin, Sūryāvarta, Svarakṣaya, Soṣa of Nāsā and Āsya, Vāksaṅga, Kṛcchrabodha and Avabāhuka.
Śamana Nasya:
शमनं नीलिकाव्यङ्गकेशदोषाक्षिराजिषु||४|| (As Hr/Su/20/4)
Śamana Nasya is indicated for Nīlika, Vyaṅga, Kesa Doṣā and Akṣi Rāji.
Pratimarśa Nasya:
प्रतिमर्शः क्षतक्षामबालवृद्धसुखात्मसु|
प्रयोज्योऽकालवर्षेऽपि
Pratimarśa nasya can be administered to Kṣata, Kshāma, Bāla, Vruddha, Sukhātma, and even in Akāla Varṣa
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF NASYA (AYOGYA)
Specific Contraindications
अशिरोविरेचनार्हास्तु अजीर्णिभुक्तभक्तपीतस्नेहमद्यतोयपातुकामाः स्नातशिराः स्नातुकामः क्षुत्तृष्णाश्रमार्तमत्तमूर्च्छितशस्त्रदण्डहतव्यवायव्यायामपानक्लान्तनवज्वरशोकाभितप्तविरिक्तानुवासितगर्भिणीनवप्रतिश्यायार्ताः, अनृतौ दुर्दिने चेति||२०|| (Cha/Si/2/20)
Ajīrṇa, who has taken meals, who had taken Sneha, consumed Madya, consumed Toya, taken head bath, desires to take bath, having Kṣut, suffering with Tṛṣṇā, Śrama, Mada, Mūrccha, injured by weapons and stick, fatigue due to coitus, fatigue due to exercise, fatigue due to alcohol, Navajvara, afflicted with Śoka, undergone Virecana, Garbhiṇī, Navapratiśyāya, improper season and cloudy day.
REASONS FOR CONTRA INDICATIONS OF NASYA
Nasya is contraindicated by a person who just had his food, if done the increased Doṣā will cover the Ūrdhavaha Srotas and bring Chardi, Śvāsa, Kāsa and Pratiśyāya. If Nasya administered to those who are about to do Snehapāna or done Snehapāna; it will harm eyes, nose, oral cavity and bring Timira and Śirorogas. If Nasya done to a person who did head bath, then it will bring pain in head, eyes, ear and throat along with Pīnasa, Hanustambha, Manyāstambha, Ardita, Śirakampa. If done to person who wants to take bath, then it will bring Staimitya of Mūrdha, Jaḍatā, Aruci and Pīnasa. If done to Srutaraktī, then it will cause Kṣāmatā, Aruci and Agnināśa. In persons who have Mala – Mūtra Vega Pravṛtti, then Mala Mūtra Vega dhāraṇajanya diseases are produced. If done to a person who got Abhighāta then his pain will increase so much. If a person who performed Vamana, Virecana did Nasya it creates Swāsa, Kāsa, Swarahāni, Indriyahāni, Śirogaurava, Kandu and Kṛmidoṣā. If done in Garbhiṇi it brings hatredness towards food, Jvara, Mūrchā and Ardhāvabhedaka and the same will create Vyaṅga, Indirya Vaikalya, Unmāda and Apasmāra to the progeny. If done to a puerperal women it brings the same disease as that of bloodletting. If done to Nava Pratiśyāya then it will make the disease chronic, hairfall, Kṛmi, Kandu and Vicarcikā. If done to Śvāsa and Kāsa Rogi, Vyādhi Vṛddhi will occur. If done at imporper time or day soon it will create Śiroroga, Vepathu, Staimitya, and itching of palate, eyes, Manyāstambha, Kaṇṭha Roga, Pratiśyāya and Aruṃṣikā.

Contraindication of pratimarśa nasya:
न त्विष्टो दुष्टपीनसे||२६||
मद्यपीतेऽबलश्रोत्रे कृमिदूषितमूर्द्धनि|
उत्कृष्टोत्क्लिष्टदोषे च, हीनमात्रतया हि सः
Pratimarśa Nasya is not indicated in Duṣṭa Pīnasa, weak Srotra Indriya, head infected by Kṛmi, not in already Utkliṣṭa Doṣā since the dose is very less only.
Indicated and contraindicated age
न नस्यमूनसप्ताब्दे नातीताशीतिवत्सरे||.(AsHr/Su/19)
Below the age of seven or above eighty we should not do Nasya .
According to Śārṅgadhara, Nasya can be given only after the age of eight years and should not be given after eighty years.
Dose for Nasya karma is calculated in Bindu Pramāṇa.
Bindu means

The amount of oil falls when two phalanges of the index finger is dipped into oil and taken out is termed as Bindu.
Dose of marśa(sneha) and avapīḍa (vairecanika) nasya:
यावत्पत्यसौ बिन्दुर्दशाष्टौ षट् क्रमेण ते|
मर्शस्योत्कृष्टमध्योना मात्रास्ता एव च क्रमात्||
बिन्दुद्वयोनाः कल्कादेः (As Hr/Su/20/ 20)
Marśa Nasya need to be administered in the dose of 10, 8 and 6 Bindu Pramāṇa for Pravara, Madhyama and Avara Mātrā.
For Kalkādi Avapīḍaka Nasya dose should be 8, 6 and 4 Bindu Paramana for Pravara, Madhyama and Avara Mātrā.
According to Sharaṅgadhara, śirovirecana Nasya Mātrās are 8,6 and 4 bindu in each nostril . This is the Pravara, Madhyama and Avara Mātrā.

TIME OF ADMINISTRATION OF NASYA (NASYA KĀLA)
प्रावृट्शरद्वसन्तेतरेष्वात्ययिकेषु रोगेषु नावनं कुर्यात् कृत्रिमगुणोपधानात्; ग्रीष्मे पूर्वाह्णे, शीते मध्याह्ने, वर्षास्वदुर्दिने चेति||२३|| (Cha/Si/2/23)
In Prāvṛṭ, Śarad, Vasanta and during emergency it can be given in any season by creating artificial conditions of the required seasons. In Grīṣma, morning time, in cold season during afternoon and in Varṣa Ṛtu when the weather is not cloudy.
तत्रैतद्द्विविधमप्यभुक्तवतोऽन्नकाले पूर्वाह्णे श्लेष्मरोगिणां, मध्याह्ने पित्तरोगिणां, अपराह्णे वातरोगिणाम् ||२४||(Su/Chi/40/24)
Snaihika and Vairecanika Type of Nasya should be administered during the time of meal in empty stomach. For Kaphaja Vikāra day time is ideal, for Paittika Vikāra mid day is ideal and for Vātika Vikāra afternoon is ideal.

शीते मध्यंदिने, ग्रीष्मे सायं वर्षासु सातपे (As Hr/Su/20/14)
Nasya should be administered in the morning for Śleṣma, during midday for Pitta, in the evening or night for Vāta, for the healthy in the forenoons during Śarad and Vasanta Ṛtu, during midday in Śītakāla, evening in Grīṣma Ṛtu, when there is sunlight during Varṣa Ṛtu.

Daily morning and evening Nasya need to be done for Vātakopa in Śiras, Hikkā, Syāma, Apatānaka, Manyāstambha and Svarabhraṃśa.
During night Nasya need to be done for Lālāsrāva, Supti, Pralāpa, Dantakaṭakaṭāyana. Krathana, Kṛcchro Unmīlana, Pūtimukha, Karṇanāda, Tṛṣṇā, Śiroroga, Swāsa and Kāsa.
Pratimarśa kāla:
निशाहर्भुक्तवान्ताहः स्वप्नाध्वश्रमरेतसाम्|
शिरोभ्यञ्जनगण्डूषप्रस्रावाञ्जनवर्चसाम्|
दन्तकाष्ठस्य हासस्य योज्योऽन्तेऽसौ द्विबिन्दुकः| (As Hr/Su/20/ 28)
Pratimarśa need to be done at night time, day time, after food, after day sleep, after walking, after exhortive work, after coitus, after head massage, Gaṇḍūṣa Prasrava, applying Anjana and after defecation.
प्रत्यहं सायम्प्रातरुभयकालं वा| अनेन विधिना पञ्च सप्त
नव वा दिनानि दद्यादासम्यग्योगाद्वा||१८|| (As San/Su/29/16)
Nasya can be done in morning or evening or both the times daily for 5 days, 7 days, or 9 days till the attainment of Samyak Nasyakṛta Lakṣaṇa.
एकान्तरं द्व्यन्तरं वा सप्ताहं वा पुनः पुनः |
एकविंशतिरात्रं वा यावद्वा साधु मन्यते ||४२| (Su/Chi/40/42)
According to Suśruta, Nasya can be given continuously at the interval of 1, 2, 7 and 21 days depending on the condition of the patient and the disease.
