EXPLANATORY NOTES

GAṆḌŪṢA, KAVALA

GAṆḌŪṢA

Definition

 असञ्चार्या तु या मात्रा गण्डूषः स प्रकीर्तितः ॥ (Su.Ci.40/62)

 Holding of oil in oral cavity without any movement is called gaṇḍūṣa

Bheda:

1.Snigdha  

2.Śamana

3.Śodhana

4.Ropaṇa

Procedure of gaṇḍūṣa:

When the sun is shining and the day is devoid of breeze, after fomenting and massaging the shoulders and neck, he should retain the liquid in his mouth (not allowing the medicines into his stomach) till the  mouth gets filled with kapha (mucous)or till there are secretions from nose and eyes. Sneha gaṇḍūṣa is done with fats processed with sweet, sour, salty tastes.

Indication:

Vātaja Mukha rogas

Pittaja Mukha rogas

Kaphaja Mukha rogas

Mukhaja Vraṇa

Contraindications:

Persons suffering from Viṣa, Mürcha, Mada, śoṣa, Raktapitta, kupita akṣimala, kṣīṇa and Rūkṣa rogi . Gaṇḍūṣa is contraindicated below the age of 5 years .

 

KAVALA

Definition:

 सुखं सञ्चार्यते या तु मात्रा स कवलः स्मृतः । (Su Ci. 40/62)

Kavala is the procedure of holding Sneha in the mouth upto half of its capacity with movement inside.

Method of administration:

It should be done with concentration, sitting erect, liquid should be kept in full mouth till dosa gets filled in mouth or before discharge from nasal passage and eyes after that, the liquid should be spit out.

Indication:

Diseases of manya, head ,ear, mouth, disease of throat, dryness of mouth, anorexia.

 Benefits:

It removes kapha, truṣṇa and mala.

DHŪMAPĀNA

Method of administration:

One should sit straight and should be attentive. Patient mouth should be kept open. Inhale smoke through each nostril alternatively by closing one nostril. Then exhale it through mouth.

Precautions:

Dhūma inhaled through the nostril or mouth should be exhaled through the mouth not by nose.

सुखंसञ्चार्यतेयातुमात्रा स कवलःस्मृतः ।            (Su. Ci. 40/62)

Kavala is the procedure of holding Sneha in the mouth upto half of its capacity while moving it inside the mouth.
